Health Insurance Words You Should Know (In Plain English)
By Michael Burr · June 28, 2026

Insurance comes with a lot of confusing words. The truth is, most of them are simple once someone explains them. Here are the ones you'll see most — in plain English.
Premium
This is the amount you pay each month to have insurance. Think of it like a subscription — you pay it whether you use care that month or not.
Deductible
This is what you pay for care before your plan starts to help. Once you've paid your deductible for the year, your plan begins covering more of the cost.
] Copay
A copay is a small, set fee you pay when you get care — like $25 for a doctor visit. Your plan covers the rest.
Out-of-pocket maximum
This is the most you'll have to pay in a year. After you hit it, your plan covers 100% of covered care. It's your safety net.
Network
Your network is the group of doctors and hospitals that work with your plan. Staying in-network usually costs you less.
